ATOM MOUTH GIMLIES - "Music on Quills" 12''

Dark and desperate-sounding garage punk from Finland. This is my first exposure to this band, and the first track made me think of LOST SOUNDS, without synths and stripped of vocal melody. I slowly came to realize that this is a much more deranged band. The singer has a distant howl that never comes to sound familiar over the course of this record's roughly sixteen-minute playing time. Come to think of it, this whole record sounds like it was recorded at the end of a long dark hallway. By the time I flipped this one I was fully immersed: the B-side features an especially sick sequence of tracks, 45 seconds at a time, spiraling out of control between severely damaged interpretations of the URINALS and FEEDTIME . If you are a fan of songs where the players manage to play out of sync with one another even though there's only one riff (or even one chord), don't let this slip under your radar. Defiantly ugly music. (EW)

Still SingleA punk record from Finland has, by grace of history, the potential to be a really explosive thing, or at the very least, something so weird that it stands in a class by itself. Blame Radiopuhelimet or the Bad Vugum label or Räjäyttäjät (or even “What Does The Fox Say”) for having set my expectations so high in decades past. Mustat Kalsarit plays pretty standard butt-rock with some guitar detonation on “Olen Pahoillani” but what really struck me is that the four labels it took to birth this thing almost perfectly summarized my experience as a listener. “Hyster Tapes” signifies hysteria, the realm of violent possibility that this record was gonna knock me off my chair the second I put it on. “Jumatsuga” (a word that, at press time, means nothing to me) encapsulates my wan disappointment and confusion when the music turned into … wait for it … “Rock ‘N’ Roll Bullshit.” By the end I wanted to strap some “TNT” to it and blow it into a million pieces. MRR #374:

Boiling Oingo (besides having the best punk pseudonym of this century, so far) sounds like he recorded all his guitar and vocal parts completely separately from not only each other, but possibly the drums as well. Everything is as loud as it possibly can be (which is louder than you'd probably think it should be), and if you can slice through the fuzz and noise, you'll find some great tunes. The insanity of the recording quality is like an instrument in itself. Punk with a hint of Pacific Northwest late '80s grunge. "Death" and "Rash Boy" are the standout cuts on this slab of snot. I can't picture what this band looks like, or what kinds of bills they would play - and I mean that as a compliment. This record is ugly in a beautiful way. (FU)

Ensinnä kiinnittyy huomio ep:n kansien tunnelmaan. Luulin saaneeni käsiini jonkin 80-luvun englantilaisen powerpop-sinkun. No onhan tässä nyt poweria, herrajjesta! Poppiakin on. Mutta voimakkaimmin lähestyy uhkaava, mieltä vailla oleva hallitsematon jännitystila. Mitä tapahtuu? Mitä ON tapahtunut?? 4 liveäänitettyä kappaletta. Livenä tallentaminen tuntuu Atom Mouth Gimliesille soveltuvan. A-puolella on jopa selkosoundit kun taas b:llä mennään enemmän sellaisen korville loimivan kokonaissoundin ehdoilla. Siinä missä jonkin muun bändin yhteydessä sanoisin "puuro", sanon nyt ”loukku”. Tämä vangitsee.

Atom Mouth Gimliesin uunituore seiska kolahti postiluukkuuni viime viikon perjantaina.

Omat henkilökohtaiset ennakko-odotukseni olivat korkealla tämän seiskan suhteen ja en ole joutunut pettymään. Hauskana tarinana kerrottakoon, että A-puolen ensimmäisen kappaleen nimi hämäsi sen verran, että ehdin hetken aikaa kuunnella levyä nopeudella 33rpm, mutta noin kymmenen sekunnin kuluttua iski tajuntaani ajatus, että ei taida nyt olla soittimen nopeus ihan kohdillaan. No nopea muutos 45rpm nopeuteen ja johan alkoi kuulostaa sille miltä odotinkin.

A-puolen molemmat biisit ovat tiukkaa tavaraa samoin kun B-puolella. Omaksi suosikikseni on noussut B-puolen avaava raita 1000 Atomers Behind the Moon. Kaikki kappaleet ovat äänitetty livenä ja näin ollen bändin saundi on äärimmäisen originaali. Itse en juuri bändivertailuista/lokeroinnista perusta, mutta Atom Mouth Gimlies asettuu omassa mielessäni jonnekin samoille seuduille Räjäyttäjien kanssa. Suosittelen tutustumaan bändiin ja tähän seiskaan tarkemmin sen verran tiukkaa garage punk meininkiä on neljän biisin verran luvassa. Samoin mikäli vain kasettisoitin/dekki löytyy vielä steroistasi niin kannattaa hankkia saman bändin c-kassu Ram the Bulb. Viime viikonlopun Kuudes Aisti festareillakin esiintynyt bändi on siis hyvässä vedossa myös vinyylillä että kasetilla. Harmi vain, että keikkoja ei taida olla ainakaan tällä hetkellä tiedossa. Toivotaan, että tähän saadaan muutos ja Atom Mouth Gimlies nähdään lavalla taas piakkoin.

From last year’s Ode To Sidewinder EP. It was their fifth release in 2 & 1/2 years, with a 6th EP (a split w/ Lörsson) out this month on Jumatsuga. The Fins’ve dominated the barely-holding-back-the-puke, anti-social yelp rock since Olli Pauke's glory days, and the tradition caries on with every AMG release. Uniquely Finish in execution and attitude, they fit nicely alongside the current crop of Räjä-n-Roll sociopaths spewing dead drunk anthems, lubricated by a seemingly bottomless well of spritzing saliva, front rows all soaked in the process.
